I mostly ride fixed gear. It's been like that for about ten or twelve years now. Why? It's wayyy more fun than anything else. So I thought I'd write a a few thoughts about riding fixed:
Simplicity... My track bike is stripped back to the max. Perhaps the only unnecessary things are a speedo and charm dangling off the saddle rails. No bottle cage, gears, rear brake etc. Looks good and light.
Ease of maintenance... A direct consequence of simplicity is the ease of maintenance. Chain tension, lube and tire pressure is all that need to be kept in check. Sweet.
Fun to ride... I love the immediacy of riding fixed. I stand up on the pedals instead of relying on gears. I attack hills rather than let them beat me. I keep the momentum high.
Great for the city... Living in a flat-ish city, the fixie is good for trips long and short. I've got less to go wrong, less to steal. It's also really quiet which is fun for sneaking up on people!
Distances shrink..! When it's all as good as this, life becomes a joy. You'll wake up and want to rip some laps of Regents! or make an adventure of going to get lunch out.
Get a completely new bike... Just by changing the handlebars. With only one brake cable, so EASY!
